The Department of Old and Rare Book possesses a collection of 1,022 bibliographic units. The fund of rare books comprises 329 books published between 1741 and 1941.
The old and rare book is a movable cultural heritage, representing a special and protected part of the library fund. The most significant purpose of this collection is to protect and preserve our cultural heritage from decay and to enable experts of different profiles to undertake various historical, linguistic, literary and sociological researches.
We especially emphasize the works of Serbian writers, scientists and cultural workers who were born in Sarajevo. These are the works of invaluable importance for understanding Sarajevo's past, history, science and culture.
Library valuables are 280 black letter books donated by PhD. professor Tanja Mihać and the private library of Miloš Somborski, the first dean of the Faculty of Architecture in Sarajevo, director of the Urban Planning Institute of the People's Republic of Serbia and director of Urban Planning Institute. Miloš Somborski was a pioneer of urbanism as a special branch of architecture and founder of the first Yugoslavian Department of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture in Sarajevo after World War II.
The collection of old and rare books is filled with special care, with the most valuable collection consisting of war editions (1912-1913, 1914-1918, 1939-1945, and 1992-1995).
Old and rare books are processed in the electronic catalog, and their search is possible by different parameters (author, title, year of publication, publisher etc.)
Old and rare books cannot be borrowed from the library and are only available to the users in the reading room.
